Rev Robert D. Hughes was an amazing man who invested his love, guidance and encouragement in lots of people. He was the first Dean of the Leadership Academy. His wife Kathleen was a former region president. Please pray for Kathleen and the Hughes family as they grieve his passing.

Robert D. Hughes was born in Bucyrus, Ohio to Hugh T. and Reba (Craner) Hughes.  He graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1945, Denison University in 1950, and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1954. He preached his first sermon at the age of 14, in his grandfather’s church.  After seminary he pastored churches in Marietta, Painesville, Loudonville, Attica, and Cuyahoga Falls.  

From 1967-1977 he worked for Children’s Services in Lake and Trumbull counties, while doing several short interims. After he retired from full-time pastoring, he served as interim pastor to 23 churches in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York.  He also was a substitute teacher at Seneca East High School in Attica, Ohio in the early eighties.
Robert was a member of Attica Lodge #367 F&AM and the Rotary Clubs of Attica and Cuyahoga Falls.  He was very active in the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association.  He was instrumental in starting the American Baptist Churches of Ohio Lay Pastor Training Program. 
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, R. Kathleen (Stephenson), originally of Ironton, Ohio, and his children: Stephanie (Steve) Colton, Gwen Peterman, David, Heidi (Robert) Carr, Laurie Yeckle, Daniel, and Gretchen (Greg) Fiocca; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother Harry Hughes of Bucyrus, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Debra K. Anderson, son-in-law Julius Yeckle, and sister Marilyn Harrer.
